If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay and there's too much damage for the tooth to be repaired - the tooth needs to be extracted. Before a tooth is extracted, the area surrounding the tooth is numbed with a topical and or injectable anesthetic such as Novocain.
After the extraction, your dentist will advise you of what post extraction regimen to follow. Patients with extracted teeth may need to take an antibiotic and take precautions following the procedure to ensure that infection doesn't occur. Do not rinse vigorously or probe the area with any objects. You may brush your teeth gently. Smoking will slow healing, causing increased discomfort and increased chance of dry sockets.
