Root planing and scaling is one of the most effective ways to treat gum disease before it becomes to severe. Gum disease is an inflammation of the gum tissue that can affect the teeth and supporting bone in your mouth.
Before the procedure, your dentist will administer local anesthetic to reduce any discomfort. Then, a small instrument called a "scaler," or an ultrasonic cleaner, is used to clean just above and beneath your gum line to remove the plaque and tartar build up. Removal of bacteria from diseased root surfaces will allow the gum tissues to begin to heal. Once the gum tissues heal there is less inflammation and bleeding in the mouth.
