A root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp has become infected. The pulp is inside the inner chamber of the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and other tissues. When the infection becomes worse, it can begin affecting the roots. A diseased tooth can present variety of problems; pain and sensitivity are some of the first indications of a problem; but inside, a spreading infection can cause small pockets of pus to develop, leading to an abscess.
During root canal therapy the infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is disinfected. Then the hollowed inside of the tooth is filled with a rubber-like material that will prevent further infections. After this the dentist will determine the ideal way to restore the tooth: either with a filling or crown.
