An impacted tooth happens when a tooth that pushes through your gum gets blocked, in most cases this refers to wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars. They may become impacted because there is not enough room between existing teeth, or they may be trying to come in sideways or tilted in your jaw. When this happens, problems such as improper bites, crowding and more develop. If wisdom teeth are causing a problem and are not pulled, they can sometimes become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can be extremely painful, as well as harmful to your oral health. If untreated for long, and impacted wisdom tooth can lead to serious infections such as pericoronitis that can spread to your throat or into your neck. These kinds of infections require surgery and hospital stays.
Symptoms of impacted teeth include:
- Swelling of your gums in the back of your mouth
- Difficulty opening your jaw
- Pain in nearby teeth, or in the ear on that side of your face
- Bad breath and taste in your mouth
- Pain when opening your mouth, or chewing and biting
- Recurring pain for several days that disappear and reappear weeks or months later
In most cases the treatment for an impacted wisdom tooth is simply the removal of it, although there are cases where a standard impacted tooth may not bother you at all. The lack of any or all of the wisdom teeth does not hinder you in anyway, and in most cases people opt to take all 4 wisdom teeth out to prevent any more issues.
