Flap dental surgery cleans the roots of a tooth and repairs bone damage caused by gum disease. Flap surgery is usually necessary if dental scaling and root planing are not enough to remove the plaque build up. As plaque and tartar accumulates under the gum tissue bone and tissue loss can occur. Eventually, if too much bone is lost, the teeth will need to be extracted.
Before the procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area where the doctor will work on your gums. A small incision is then made to separate the gums from the teeth. The gum tissue is gently folded back to give access to the roots and the supporting bone tissue. Next, the tooth roots can are cleaned; if needed, the area may also be treated with antibiotics or other medications. Bone defects can also be repaired.
