Dry mouth is a condition caused by diminishing saliva production in the mouth and you no longer have enough to keep your mouth moisturized. Dry mouth can be very uncomfortable, and may lead to inflamed tissues in your mouth and thus you become more susceptible to infection. It is important to take good care of your teeth and gums. Common causes for dry mouth include medications, stress, nervousness, aging, smoking, drugs and more. Signs and symptoms include:
- A dry tongue.
- Bad breath.
- Cracked lips.
- Trouble chewing, tasting, swallowing and speaking.
- A dry feeling in mouth and/or throat.
Treatment for dry mouth varies depending on the cause. If dry mouth is a side effect of certain medication, the only way to cure it would be to change medications. In some cases it may be your salivary glands that are just not working properly, and you may receive some medication for that. Additionally, you can use artificial saliva to keep your mouth moist. To minimize dry mouth, avoid sugar and acidic foods, tobacco and alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and try to sip water regularly.
